I brought my family out to go sit in a CTS to show them what the CTS Wagon's interior will be like.

Kinja'd!!!

First and foremost, the thing that is getting us to purchase a new vehicle is having a baby on the way, and the need/want for a vehicle that can haul a baby, 11y/o and two 70+ lb dogs. Sadly, my Impreza isn't going to cut it for much longer. The CTS wagon is the ideal vehicle in my mind, lots of storage space, comfy, dogs have room without sitting all over the seats and it is easy to access the baby. However, my fiancee was of a slightly different mindset. She was picturing upgrading to something closer to the size of a minivan. I will be damned if I purchase a minivan as my daily driver...

So when I showed her a regular CTS sedan telling her the interior is very similar, only with far more cargo capacity, she instantly rejected the idea saying, "nope nope nope".

Kinja'd!!!

Upon seeing my broken face, she immediately amended her initial reaction saying that she was saying nope to the sedan, and she is still open to sitting in the wagon. Her biggest gripe against the interior was that she couldn't picture hauling all of our cargo, two dogs, my soon to be mother in law and the baby to be on vacation, not this summer, but the summer after. I do NOT want to be stuck in a minivan or "suv" just for a trip that is going to happen a year and a half from now.

What makes it worse, is that as we were leaving the dealership, she pointed out a Buick Enclave saying that is what she had in mind... but without the third row of seats. So the dogs would have somewhere to sit.

My plan of attack now, is to convince her that even if we get a full sized SUV, we won't have the space to carry both dogs and all of our luggage for that one trip. This should work decently since she was hoping to rent a truck/trailer instead of staying in hotel rooms for two weeks.

Wish me luck!

Don't get an SUV/Minivan. You'll regret it every day of your life if it's not what you want.

Isn't the CTS wagon cheaper on insurance and more fuel efficient as well?

The CTS wagon is awesome. Grab one while you can! Or even if not, there's always CPO.

Get ahold of me if/when you sell the Impreza... year, trim?

An Outback won't do it? There's plenty of room for the dogs in the back of one of those... I have one, I should know. Or even the Forester, circa 04-05ish.

Wait. It sounds like you need to show her the wagon before freaking out.

She seems to have 'SUV Syndrome', where she thinks the only way to have space is to be in an SUV. You showed her a sedan, which is obviously not spacious. The wagon is much more spacious.

Over two years the CTS will use about $500 less on fuel compared to an enclave or tribeca, and I'm not sure about insurance.

Good luck... I have no kid and don't plan on getting any, but the choice of car is a daily fight with my wife... Luckily for now she likes old Mercedes wagon which will be perfect as a car for her... Hopefully the minivan conversation never happen again... Good luck and never give up. It's all I can say ;)

heck of alot of Roadmaster Estates out there. Have her sit in a nice one of those (she is going to say it is toooooo biiiiiiiig and you will have more leverage on the CTS). My kids mom freaked out when I showed up with my Buick, until we took our first family vacation in it. She ended up driving it more than me.

We both detest the look of the outback.

Our current Impreza is a 2009 black manual 2.5i sedan with about 60,000 miles (100,000km since I'm in Canada)

I'm looking at getting a used wagon with around 40,000 miles on it in the $25,000 range. I don't want to buy two beater cars a truck and fuel/insurance to cover it all.

Sorry to be on the bad side, but we (my family) had a Buick Enclave, and it was great interms of interior space. We're on to a LR3 now, which is also nice. All I have to say is that the Buick Enclave is SO slow.

Yup, I'm young enough that I'm to young to drive in CT (driving age is 16), and my parents didn't get another minivan after I turned about 5. And I have 2 brothers.

I consider a minivan to be something like an Odessey and that Buick to be an SUV. So when I said minivan I meant something along the lines of an Odessey.

Kinja'd!!! A3R0 > Joe_Limon
02/02/2014 at 13:12

By the way, the "SUV's" have equal to or more room than a minivan. Do yourself a favor and don't buy a minivan, because who wants one of those.

You should just rent a minvan for your trip. Wanting space for the other 99.9% of your life is very reasonable though. Good luck on this - sounds frustrating as hell.

As soon as she pointed out the Buick Enclave, I would have just "instantly rejected the idea saying nope nope nope." I am rooting for you to keep pushing for the wagon, but if you are getting a SUV though I would recommend the Ford Expedition. At any point in my life there was an expedition that has carried me thousands of miles and took all of my stuff for college or summer vacation in one trip. It is comfortable and has more than enough grunt to move itself out of the way. You could probably get a good deal on a used one and mechanically they are as bulletproof as they come.
